One simply presses the green rubber ball hard into the caseback to which it supposedly sticks before twisting in a counter-clockwise direction. However, there is always the potential for you to drop the watch while attempting to open it. So relish the doubt, and tread very carefully indeed. Who knows? If you do try to open a Rolex, make sure you have all of the proper tools. I have one somewhat related question. Would a genuine Rolex Day-Date have a model on the holographic case back sticker indicating a smilar but different Datejust??

Trying to determine if a watch is the real article, without being able to open the case. Thanks so much for your time and expertise.

Best regards, Andy G. Hi Andy, thanks for reading! Regarding your question about whether a Day-Date would have a factory caseback sticker that corresponds to a Datejust reference, it is highly unlikely; however there are a couple quick things you can do to help verify the authenticity of the watch without opening it up.

First and foremost, the Day-Date has only ever been crafted from either solid gold or platinum. With the exception of an incredibly small handful of vintage stainless steel examples it is believed that they were prototypes or training watches , you will only find Rolex Day-Date watches in either 18k gold all three colors or platinum, so they will be relatively heavy or at least heavier than a standard steel watch of a comparable size.
